And So It Begins

To say we refreshed the browser a few times waiting for our training plans would be a serious understatement. When this email finally came, we were pretty excited.

And that excitement quickly turned into a constant state of tiredness. The week started off with a tempo run on Monday and boot camp Tuesday morning. Wednesday was Global Running Day which meant Deanne and I went to work representing! Not pictured here: our accidental twinning the day after.

It also meant that I had to mad dash from the Bank of America Chicago Marathon charity kick off near Grant Park (thankfully we were supposed to wear our gear)

Thursday was boot camp again and then Friday morning was an easy run with my new favorite running buddy (she’s so cute right?)

This weekend kicked off with dinner at a new seafood place nearby with Meghan and Laura and then a slumber party with these two (and a pretty early bed time).

They hung out in bed when I headed out for my long run Saturday where I met these fellow Team LUNGevity runners and Meghan for 7 miles. It was awesome connecting with Katie, one of our new runners! While talking we learned that her mom, a survivor, lives near the Cleveland event this weekend and is able to join us!

Sunday we ‘rested’ which to me means dog beach, errands, and a nice stroll (okay maybe more than a stroll) around town.

60 with a Chance of Running

After training for a spring marathon (never again) in the Chicago winter, I have reverted to the nice, warm, cozy treadmill at the gym. With it being 60 degrees in February though, I realized this morning that I am out of excuses to avoid running outside.

So I laced up and hit the sidewalk in a t-shirt (!!!) and as soon as I reached the end of my block (so like .07 miles into my 3 mile run) I remembered that it was SO MUCH harder than running on a treadmill. I do boot camp twice a week, Shred, run miles and miles of intervals at the gym but a block of running outdoors and I was winded.  Part of me just wanted to just turn around and go back to bed but I reminded myself that I’ve run 5 marathons (one with a broken foot) so I can totally get to the lake and back. So I did. . .and I got to see this view:

And on my way back to my apartment I decided I would focus less on my 10:45 mile pace and more on just being proud that I got up and ran.

Speaking of proud. . . I have two pretty fantastic sisters. This one will be attending University of Minnesota Twin Cities in the Fall studying engineering (nerd):

And this one is training for her first half marathon in April (she did her first 7 mile long run last weekend) and will be running the Chicago Marathon in October for Paws. She basically has an arc of animals at her house  (seriously, check out her fundraising page) so it’s only natural that she’d run for them. If you love animals, please consider donating to her page. If you don’t. . . you might want to get that checked out.

Four Years of Awesome

Event season is coming up and things are about to get real. In anticipation of my 4th year (holy cow right), below are some highlights.

I could have never in a million years imagined how crazy weird and awesome my life would be. In the last four years I’ve had the most amazing co-workers, participants and volunteers, I’ve run 4 marathons raising thousands of dollars and every morning (okay pretty much every morning. . .I’m human) I wake up super excited to go to work.

This totally is not the life I had planned for myself but I’m pretty happy with the way it’s turned out so far.

Shout out to this guy for always supporting me and having my back.

Public Service Announcement: Super Cool Stuff Happening Over Here

Our Breathe Deep team is getting fired up over here! With a few spring events under our belts already and event season right around the corner, things are starting to get busy (read: so much excitement and even more coffee). A little recap:

In April I traveled to Breathe Deep Pittsburgh where it was 19 degrees as we set up. A little cold can’t stop us though!

The week after, these goons joined me at Breathe Deep North Shore. The weather was amazing, the event went smoothly AND one of our survivors got engaged! And for those of you who don’t know, their event is SO CLOSE TO ONE MILLION DOLLARS! I’ll leave this here for anyone who would like to help us reach our goal!

This weekend I’m heading to the fine city of Newark, OH for the 5th annual Breathe Deep Newark and I am so stinkin excited! A little sneak peak of our volunteer kisses!

P.S. While I’m just managing TEAM LUNGevity this year, Deanne is back again and will be our team mascot (don’t tell her I said that). So all of those folks who donated to me should definitely consider supporting her because she’s awesome and is totally going to beat Oprah’s time this year WHILE also simultaneously raising money for critical lung cancer research. Kind of a big deal.

26 Days to Go

This weekend started off with some solid adulting on mine and Meghan’s part when we stood on unstable stools and tried to replace the light bulbs in our fan. We got to take a trip to this place. .

Since my heel has been hurting more and more I decided to skip this weeks runs and get my zen on in hot yoga instead. Initially I had to con Laura into going with me but after her first class she was hooked, aside from the whole ‘being hot part’. I don’t think there’s anything they can do about that, it’s kind of in the name. . .

So instead of doing my long run on Saturday, I slept in and then Deanne and I met and hung out with kiddos at Bell Elementary and made signs for our Team LUNGevity runners. Below are a few of my favorites. . .

For the past couple of months Laura’s been trying to convince us to go to Mad River to watch a game with her so Monday night we gave in and all of us eagle bombed our way through their loss. If you’ve never had an eagle bomb, congrats, you’re smart and not missing out. It basically tastes like vodka, redbull and regret and while Laura will dispute this, just because they’re free, doesn’t make them a good idea. The waitress was so super nice so I won’t hold a grudge that she forgot the whiz on my cheese steak but seemed to keep the eagle bombs flowing. . .however if I ever go back to that place, it’s water and beer only.

On the bright side I won my first week of fantasy football, no thanks to my own doing of course. But I consider my ability to call on friends, family and random gentlemen on the street to help manage my team a skill.

And with 26 days to go to the marathon I am slightly nervous about the whole running part (a minor thing I know). I have a 20 miler in Philly, 12 miles on the lakefront, 8 in Breese (8 miles of cow. . .) and then it’s marathon time. Not to mention all of the pre-marathon activities we have planned like movie night, yoga and pasta party the week before! So I am in it to win it for this one (okay in it to come in like 40,987th pace) and this guy is right.

Running, Eating, and Getting Older

With the marathon 32 days away (but seriously, who is counting anyways) and event season now in full swing, this is going to be my motto for the next couple of months.

I turn 28 in a couple of weeks and while I joke a lot about getting old I’m really not that freaked out about it. I have a pretty awesome life so far. My family is amazing and supportive and only annoy me like 16% of the time, my friends are pretty cool and still put up with me, and I have the best job, co-workers and volunteers a girl could ask for. So if this is what 28 is going to be like, then I think I’m going to be okay. Not to mention Fall is just around the corner which means my favorite. . .
