Running Around

The last couple of weeks have been pretty packed and it seems like it just keeps getting busier! A few months ago when I was at home I asked my dad when life gets less crazy and he just laughed and said ‘good one’ so I guess this is it! Thankfully my schedule is packed with things and people I love (mostly) so I can’t complain!

Monday was cross train day which is supposed to mean 45 minutes to an hour of any aerobic exercise other than running. According to that definition, I failed this week. I thought when marathon training started that I had lucked out with intramurals being the same day as my cross training but I don’t think it’s going to cut it anymore. After work, Deanne and I headed over to the Bank of America Marathon Charity Reception at Park Grill in Millenium Park where we ate, learned about other charity endurance programs and found a potential suitor (or so my grandma would call it). While at the reception we both decided that we want to make an effort to attend more networking events like this one (and working on our people skills). It’s a great way to learn more about other charities fundraising and endurance programs and what we can bring back to LUNGevity’s.

We had a great conversation over wine and apps about a charity that has been part of the Bank of America Marathon since 2001 and has grown over the years from 30 to over 200 runners!

So after we did this

I went straight to dodgeball (indoors) and of course got caught in the monsoon on the way there. After a couple glasses of wine dodgeball gets a little more fun (or maybe just I do) but unfortunately wasn’t exactly the 45-60 minutes of cardio that I was supposed to get. . whoops. I am considering breaking out the old roller blades next week to fulfill the requirement so anyone on the streets of Chicago (or lake front) should definitely watch themselves.

Tuesday I woke up early to get my 3 miles in and my phone was almost dead. So I left it to charge and did my run without music or my Nike App. If it’s not recorded by technology in some way, does that mean the run didn’t happen?

Around 1PM yesterday I took an hour lunch break to work outside on Cosi’s patio! The weather was perfect and I actually got a lot of work done. . . oh yeah and I ate this (I couldn’t even wait to take a bite before a photo):

After work I had about a billion (give or take) errands to run so I skipped the movie in the park and instead took this cutie with me:

Tonight I’m going to a comedy show and Deanne and I decided that waking up early and running 6 miles before work is for suckers (today at least) so we’re going to run home from work. For anyone who is wondering why I look like a slob today (I know, not much different than other days), it’s because I am multi-tasking marathon training, commuting and hanging out with Deanne.

Also, I JUST hit $1500 on my fundraising page so THANK YOU to everyone who listened to my last plea and helped me get there! Only $500 to go until I get to $2000!

Basketball, Movies and Early Morning Run

Cross training this week was basketball so it meant that there was actually some cardio going on.

Team MannysGo Team Manny’s!

My dad had some serious basketball skills back in the day (and street cred) and I played on our Catholic girls middle school team (not to brag or anything) but as an adult, I suck. I pretty much have the worst combination of qualities that you would want for this sport. I’m impatient, I’m slow, I am aggressive and competitive but also really, really clumsy. Growing up my dad was my coach (naturally) and I remember him telling me two things: never shoot (for good reason) and when in doubt kick it out. I was however, an amazing rebounder (not that I could shoot the ball after I grabbed it). I definitely could have used some of this:

Because I ended up with these:

In the end it was all okay because I brought homemade chocolate chip cookies. Food solves everything right? Speaking of food. . . last night I went to Movie’s in the Park to see Ghostbusters and ended up with this spread:

Tuesday movie in the park
Word to the wise: do not go grocery shopping when you’re hungry or you’ll end up with things like blueberry goat cheese, salami and Gummy Tummy penguins. . . Pretty much right after we sat down and started eating the rain came down. We held out for a little while (well really until we finished the wine) and then high tailed it out of there. So in other words, I still have not seen Ghostbusters. Of course it stopped raining right after we got back and it looked like this outside:

Tuesday post rain

This morning I woke up at the crack of dawn and ran 5 miles. In case you have never experienced running that early, it looks like this:

Wednesday 5 mile run
And if you’re still confused, you can refer to the beginning of pretty much any Law and Order SVU episode. Also, if you’ve never had the pleasure of seeing me, running, early, you can take a look at this mug (it’s not pretty):

Wednesday run 5 miles

Side note: This shirt is Steve’s and I’m only wearing it to show him that it is not an everyday shirt like he thinks and that it is meant for all of the things I used it for this morning. . . like aerobics when few people are around to see, sweating profusely and blowing my nose in (I hope you’re reading this šŸ˜‰

Today is, I think, the 2nd or 3rd day of summer and apparently what that means in Chicago is a foggy, wet (but not raining) medium temperature that I do not think has been classified yet. You’re a little cold and you’re also drenched but nothing is coming down from the sky? It’s weird. . . I’d like to file a formal complaint with whoever handles the weather here but I’m guessing there’s a long line. I am happy though that I can wear a t-shirt and shorts instead of 12 pairs of socks like in the winter so I’ll stop complaining now. Here is a picture of the weather and it looks exactly how I described it right?

Wednesday Fog

So my 5 miles for today are done and for anyone who would like to experience what it’s like to be behind the person wearing that shirt, here you go, you’re welcome:

Intramurals and Treadmill ADD

I must have done something right this year because the All Sports Series and the marathon gods teamed up to scheduleĀ intramurals on cross train Mondays! This means that instead of having to schedule an extra non-running workout on top of an hour long game, I can kill two birds with one stone. So Monday after work I headed home to foam roll and stretch (ew) and then played an hour of volleyball. While I don’t have a photo from Monday, I do have a mug shot from last year. . .

Tuesday’s workout called for a 3 mile interval run. Since the weather was rainy and because I haven’t gotten the hang of pacing myself for ‘sprints’, I opted to do it on the treadmill. I’m sure you’ve heard me say it before but I seriously dislike running on the treadmill. . . a lot. I feel awful saying that because most of the time the view from the workout room looks like this. . .

Treadmill view
. . . so I should not be complaining.Ā  But I think the Chicago winter made me a little bit more salty about it and the time spent running on it feels like an eternity. So while I was dreading the workout, I was happy that it was only 3 miles and would be over pretty quickly. Since this was my first interval workout of the training season you’d think that I would go into it with a plan but instead my treadmill ADD took over and I just started pressing buttons. I did my first mile alternating doing a minute at 6.5 and then a minute at 7.5 then I got bored and for the last 2 miles I started the speed out at 6.2 and then increased every 30 seconds by 1. In the end I averaged about a 9:30 mile which was slower than I had hoped for but probably what I should have expected since I didn’t really map it out (see below. . . although I’m not sure where that smiley face came from).

Tuesday 3 Mile TreadmillSince my first interval session was less than stellar I plan on doing a little research this week and actually preparing for interval session number two (I’m open to any suggestions so please send them my way). Hopefully next week I can avoid feeling like this again. . .

Then afterwards a little bit of this happened. . . (okay a lot). . .

Tuesday wine and sorbet

Tonight I plan on heading over to Chicks Night at Fleet Feet with my roommate to get in my 5 mile run. Hopefully weather is on our side! P.S. I am one of the newest members of the Fleet Feet #runchi Cheer Team!
